Wing Ding Statistical Awards Explanation, Apologies To Motor Trike
In an effort to achieve greater accuracy, the Statistical Awards at Wing Ding XXIII in Greenville this year were determined by on-site sign-up. Further, to make the awards more meaningful for the winners, the awards given were personalized certificates.
The Gold Wing Road Riders Association wishes to express its apologies to Motor Trike Incorporated, sponsor of the Statistical Awards, for any criticism they have received for this decision. GWRRA hopes that Motor Trike Incorporated and all the award recipients realize that this decision was made to personalize and enhance the exposure for this event.

GWRRA To Present Its 25th Wing Ding in Wichita, Kansas
GWRRA has contracted with the Convention & Visitor’s Bureau of Wichita, Kansas, to hold its annual international convention in that city July 1-4, 2003.
Site of the event will be Wichita’s Century II Convention Center on the banks of the Arkansas River. The convention center complex has over 128,000 square feet of exhibitor space and is attached to the recently built 303-room Hyatt Regency.
Wichita welcomes everyone to the Sunflower State and promises its “Midwest Hospitality” for all who visit. With Wichita’s many attractions including “Old Town”—Wichita’s entertainment district with over 50 shops, restaurants, theaters, and nightspots—this will prove to be a very exciting Wing Ding for GWRRA.
Attractions for the four-day event include over 150 product vendors inside air-conditioned facilities, hands-on safety seminars and on-bike training sessions, educational seminars, numerous social events and a big-name entertainer in concert.
With the 2003 Wing Ding being GWRRA’s 25th annual international get-together, and with the heritage of Wichita closely tied to the Old West, GWRRA will be celebrating a Western theme for this event.
In 2001, Wing Ding XXIII was held July 3-6 at the Palmetto Expo Center, Greenville, South Carolina. Approximately 11,250 attended the event.
In 2002, the 25th Anniversary of the Gold Wing Road Riders Association itself, Wing Ding XXIV will be at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum, Fort Wayne, Indiana.

Two Honored For Rescues
Recently, Guy Prosper, GWRRA #158484, of Castle Hayne, North Carolina, was honored by the Cape Fear Chapter of the American Red Cross for his part in the life-saving measures delivered to a fellow worker at Southport, NC’s nuclear power plant.
On November 6, 2000, Cindy Smith was found lying on the rest room floor; her heart had stopped beating. Within minutes the plant’s emergency response team arrived and began administering CPR using two portable, automated external defibrillators, which saved Ms. Smith’s life.
As a member of the team, Guy Prosper received a National Certificate of Merit, signed by President Bush. Last year the Red Cross awarded 132 of the certificates in the United States.
Also recently, Ricardo S. Giron, GWRRA #132674, of Las Vegas, New Mexico, received a Carnegie Medal for Outstanding Heroism. Rico risked his life in a daring water rescue of two drowning children, Sandy and Leonardo Garcia, in New Mexico’s Storrie Lake. The Carnegie Hero Fund Commission awarded just 105 such medals in 2000.

MN-O At Mall Of America

MN-O has some participants who are quite interested in NASCAR. We also have the Mall of America, quite literally, in our backyard. With these two facts in mind, Chapter Director Don Egge suggested a Chapter ride to the Mall to try the NASCAR Silicon Valley simulators. The plan was to also take some pictures of our bikes in front of the mall. On June 9, the accompanying photo was taken in the north parking lot of the Mall.
In attendance were Chapter Directors Don & Annette Egge, Assistant Chapter Directors Monty & Nancy Mahowald, Treasurer Scott Engle, Membership Coordinator Dave Emery, Doug O’Dell, MN District Trainer Amy Peterson and MN District Ambassadors Mike & Judy Squire.

Breast Cancer Fundraiser Sno-Bra’s!

According to Elizabeth E.W. Kirk, GWRRA #146086, motorcyclists cannot only ride, have fun and make friends, but they can also participate significantly in fund-raising activities. This photo is of Elizabeth’s 1994 GL1500 posing as a bra hanger for the Mid Atlantic Women’s Motorcycle Rally in Ocean City. The group participated in fund raising sponsored by radio station WQSR in Baltimore, Maryland. The goal was to collect 500 bras and raise $5,000 for breast cancer research. The project snow-bra’d beyond their wildest expectations to a total amount of $30,000, with more than 4,000 bras collected! A giant “sno-bra” was made of the bras, causing the creator of the bra ball to proclaim, “I never want to see another bra in my life!”

If You Don’t Ask…

Monty & Cindy Loftus, GWRRA #159461 and Tom & Pam McCombs, GWRRA #150518, rode from Colorado to Pine Bluff, Wyoming, for a District rally. They took a side trip to Sidney, Nebraska, to check out Cabela’s sporting goods store. One-hundred-degree temperatures and gusty winds took their toll on the group, and the air-conditioning in the store was a welcome relief. Spotting two life-size elks on display, Monty said, “Wouldn’t it be cool if we could put our Gold Wings in front of the display and take a picture?” The manager of Cabela’s said, “Sure, let’s try it!” The results appear here.

Chapter Promotional Brochure

Rick & Robin Greninger, GWRRA #59792, Chapter Directors of OK-P in Claremore, Oklahoma, have instituted use of a Chapter brochure. Each Chapter participant carries 10 brochures for use when they meet someone new. So far this year they have gained seven new Members and are proud of their achievement. It has been a huge success in Oklahoma, and several other Chapters have implemented the same type of brochure.

IA-I Poker Run
GWRRA Chapter IA-I from Waterloo, Iowa, held its first Poker Run/Fundraiser for Cedar Valley Hospice on June 24, 2001. Cedar Valley Hospice is a home care program that provides physical, emotional, social and spiritual support for terminally ill patients in the seven-county area surrounding Waterloo. Hospice services help patients to stay home as long as possible, surrounded by loved ones, with pain under control. The total number of in-home patients served in the year 2000 was 568, with another 153 patients and families served at the Hospice Home facility in Waterloo. IA-I plans to make this fundraiser a yearly event.
