On the Cover
W ith the new GL1800 having been in owners hands for about one year, its conceivable that some of those early machines may need a new battery soon, if not now. The sealed battery that came as standard equipment should have a service life of at least three years if properly maintained, but we know how that goes. The bike is stored over the winter months with no attempt made to keep the battery fully charged, and spring finds the battery hopelessly sulfated. For that reason, we felt that now is the right time to examine battery alternatives for the GL1800. In addition to that, the battery used in the GL1800 is of a type not familiar to many of us; its an absorbed glass mat battery (AGM). These batteries are completely sealed and have no free electrolyte sloshing around inside. We thought that now may be a good time to examine the proper way of filling and initializing this type of battery since its becoming very popular with OEMs and also as an aftermarket replacement.
